The Penn Park Project is BOP's largest renovation to date! Penn Park, originally named The Commons by William Penn, is a 15 acre park located in the center of the city. It is steeped in military history, serving as the location of a Revolutionary War encampment and later a Civil War hospital. Today the park serves as a social space for students and residents of the city.
In the spring 2012, students from Saint Patrick's Catholic School and McKinley Elementary School created sketches of their vision for Penn Park during Design Day. The BOP team worked with "playground professionals" to develop a renovation plan that reflects both the history of the park and the desires of the children.
In September 2012, DCNR staff and community volunteers completed phase 1: the addition of a Tot Play Garden to the park.
In September 2014, BOP and community volunteers completed the Youth Play Garden, which boasts the highest sliding board within the City! The Spray Garden opened on July 15, 2015 and is the first water feature in the City of York.
